      <image:title>Home - ⋮ The Therapist</image:title>
<image:caption>Hi there! I am Jill Terhune. As a therapist I have found that many times the most disturbing part of a traumatic experience is the negative belief you have about yourself afterwards such as “It’s my fault.” or “I am unlovable or unsafe.” These negative beliefs and how they are stored in the body have a profound effect on our health and our relationships. Through my work in sexual assault centers, domestic violence shelters, in private practice, and at Onsite Workshops I have learned how trauma is stored in the body, how it keeps us from living in the present moment and how it keeps us from connecting to those around us. Through EMDR, expressive arts, psychodrama, body work, and mindfulness, I have helped many overcome these challenges and lead more intentional fulfilling lives. Working with me feels like receiving unconditional positive regard, gentle confrontation and resource building in order to delve into past wounds with a deeply open, knowledgeable, and compassionate ally.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mindfulness and Body Work - How it can help…</image:title>
<image:caption>When we are upset it’s likely we are thinking about something that happened in the past or something that might happen in the future. Unfortunately, we can’t go back to the past and we don’t really know what will happen in the future. If we cannot bring our awareness into the present moment we miss our lives. Mindfulness is purposely paying attention to the present moment, non judgmentally. It helps calm the nervous system and can give you the space in life to intentionally respond instead of reacting. Our body is constantly taking in sensory information from the ticking clock in the room to what the surface of the chair feels like on our legs, but it is often not at the forefront of our awareness. Traumatic experiences and emotions associated with them are often held in certain parts of the body such as tension in the shoulders, heaviness in the chest etc. It is not until we can tap into the body that we can truly heal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Couples Counseling - Why couples counseling?</image:title>
<image:caption>The conflict between the need for autonomy, feeling like you direct your own life, and the need for attachment comes to head in a profound way when it comes to building long term romantic relationships. This struggle can manifest in a variety ways such as disagreements about money disappointment in your sex life, persistent arguing, disconnect while navigating a big transition, or betrayal. It may also be that you are in a nontraditional relationship and are struggling to find solutions to uncharted territories. Couples counseling at Affirming Life Therapy, Inc. can give you concrete tools to help you more effectively communicate and lovingly work through conflict. It can also help you see how past wounding may be impacting your ability to connect by setting you up with certain patterns of attachment; as well as how to work through this. In this way it strengthens your bond to experience yourself and your partner in a more authentic and compassionate light.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Experiential Therapy - How does it help?</image:title>
<image:caption>Many times talk therapy is not enough to delve to the root of the problem in therapy and create lasting, profound change. In the words of Confucius: “I hear and I forget. I see I remember. I do I understand.” With the help of expressive tools, activities, and techniques, our brain has the ability to create a surplus reality or reconstruction of past or present experiences in order to work through them in real time. In experiential therapy you can heal the disconnect between what you know and what you believe, essentially the disconnect between the head and the heart. It can lead you to new places of understanding and health that you never thought possible.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - Jill Terhune, Ed.S., LPC</image:title>
<image:caption>I am licensed professional clinical counselor with a graduate degree in clinical mental health, but my career in mental health really started when I became a case manager for children after college. There I learned that there were no bad children, just bad systems and most mental health challenges can be traced back to adverse life experiences. I fell in love with working with survivors of trauma at the local sexual assault centers and domestic violence shelters near my hometown in Kentucky. There I learned the power of experiential therapy and how it helps process traumatic experiences to a place of healing. Since then in private practice and at retreat centers I have come to understand trauma as being on a continuum of little T traumas, like humiliation in a school play, to big T traumas, like sexual assault or war, and that trauma is really anything that is less than a life affirming experience. I have also come to understand how the quality of our relationships is the biggest predictor of overall health. I am passionate about creating a safe space for members of the LGBTQ+ community and know how hard it can be to be apart of a marginalized group. In my free time you can find me with my husband, daughter, family and friends, hiking, doing yoga, rock climbing, playing video games, or geeking out over Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - You are worth taking care of</image:title>
<image:caption>It is my personal belief that everyone can benefit from therapy. You do not have to wait until you have hit rock bottom to reach out. If you have hit rock bottom, however, it is from that valley that you can see both sides more clearly. Taking care of your mental health has a positive ripple effect to everything and everyone else around you. If you are brave enough to start you are strong enough to finish.</image:caption>
